About the HSPT Mathematics section

At a re election for a fire chief, 43% voted yes, 27% voted no, and the rest did not vote. What fractional part did not vote? 1/3, 3/10, 3/100, or 1/10?
This is two small steps, and each has its own trap. First, the non voters are whatever is left after the yes and no votes: 100 − (43 + 27) = 100 − 70 = 30, so 30%. Second, the answers are fractions, not percents, so you have to convert: 30% is 30/100, which reduces to 3/10. The choice "3/100" is there to catch anyone who writes 30% as 3/100 by mistake. On word problems, doing the arithmetic right is only half the job, the other half is delivering the answer in the form the question asked for.
How to prepare: this is where content review pays off most. Keep a running list of every formula or rule you miss in practice, such as percent change, area of a triangle, and mean vs median, then drill your personal list. Show light work on scratch paper, and, as the example shows, check that your final answer is in the units or form the question wants.
