HSPT Score Calculator

Enter how many questions your child got right on any practice test and see the estimated scaled score, national percentile, and whether it reaches scholarship range.

How many did they get right?

From any full-length practice test. No penalty for wrong answers on the HSPT, so raw score = questions correct.

HSPT percentile chart: percent correct to national percentile

Use this chart to read any practice-test result without the calculator. Percentages apply to the whole 298-question test; the raw-score column shows the equivalent number correct. These are estimates — STS does not publish an official conversion, and each test form varies slightly.

How the calculator works

The HSPT has no wrong-answer penalty, so the raw score is simply questions correct: Verbal Skills out of 60, Quantitative Skills out of 52, Reading out of 62, Mathematics out of 64, and Language out of 60 — 298 in total. STS converts raw scores to scaled scores (200–800) and then to a national percentile comparing your child with 8th-graders nationwide. Our estimate maps percent-correct onto that percentile scale using anchor points consistent with published score interpretations: roughly 72 percent correct sits near the 75th percentile, and 85 percent correct reaches the 90th.

Two honest caveats. First, STS keeps the official form-by-form conversion private, so no online calculator — including this one — can promise the exact percentile your child's official report will show. Second, practice-test conditions matter: an untimed practice run usually scores above a real, timed sitting. For the closest estimate, use scores from a full-length, timed practice test.

What to do with the number

At the 90th percentile or higher, check the published scholarship criteria by school — many Catholic high schools award $2,000 to $7,500 per year, renewable, purely on this number. Between the 75th and 89th, your child clears the competitive bar at most schools; the fastest way into scholarship range is drilling the weakest section, which the score breakdown above identifies. Below the 75th, don't panic: HSPT percentiles respond quickly to targeted, timed practice, and our 8-week study plan is built exactly for that climb. Frequently asked questions

How is an HSPT score calculated?

Every correct answer earns one point and there is no penalty for wrong answers, so your raw score is simply the number of questions right out of 298. STS converts that raw score to a scaled score from 200 to 800, then reports it as a national percentile from 1 to 99 comparing your child with 8th-graders nationwide.

What percent correct is a good HSPT score?

Around 72 percent correct lands near the 75th national percentile, the mark most Catholic high schools consider strong. About 85 percent correct reaches the 90th percentile, where merit scholarships are commonly decided.

Is there an official HSPT score conversion chart?

No. Scholastic Testing Service does not publish an official raw-to-percentile conversion, and the exact mapping shifts slightly with each test form. The chart on this page is an estimate built from published score interpretations, close enough for planning, not an official score.

What HSPT score do you need for a scholarship?

Most published HSPT merit scholarships start at the 90th national percentile, with top awards around the 96th to 99th. Our scholarships directory lists the exact published criteria, school by school.

What is the highest possible HSPT score?

The scaled-score ceiling is 800 per section, and percentiles top out at the 99th. On raw score, a perfect test is 298 out of 298, but a 99th-percentile result does not require a perfect paper.
